The Alka-Seltzer tablets contain sodium bicarbonate and citric acid. As the Alka-Seltzer tablet dissolves in water, the citric acid
reacts with the sodium bicarbonate to produce carbonic acid (Equation 1) and carbon dioxide (Equation 2). The carbonic acid
then reacts with the basic sodium hydroxide to change the pH of the solution (Equations 3 and 4). As the base is consumed, the
solution will slowly become more acidic, resulting in the colour changes.

Canadian Climate Literacy Survey

Canadian Climate Literacy Survey

Learning for a Sustainable Future, in collaboration with Dr. Ellen Field and Associate Professor Paul Berger from the Faculty of Education at Lakehead University and Leger Research Intelligence Group, with support from SSHRC, is undertaking a national survey to gain an understanding of current levels of knowledge and perceptions of climate change and to assess the education system role in addressing climate change education.

This survey is targeting the general public, parents of K-12 students, students ages 12 -18, teachers, administrators, teacher educators, and other interested educators across the country.

Activity Ideas: Daily and Seasonal Changes – Grade 1 – by the Ontario Science Centre

This module is part of a series produced by the Ontario Science Centre on getting your students learning in a play-based classroom featuring indoor and outdoor activities centred on the Earth and Space curriculum strand.

What it’s about:

  • Students use materials provided to construct a shelter for a toy animal.
  •  Students test their shelter by blowing on it (like the Big Bad Wolf). Will it be able to withstand a strong wind?

Connections/Extensions:

  • How would the characteristics of the shelter change with the seasons (e.g. shelter from strong sun,
    waterproof shelter for rain, insulation from cold, etc.)?
  • How do animals in Ontario adapt to changing seasons and colder weather (e.g. growing a thicker coat, migration, hibernation, storing food, etc.)?
