This question that my Associate Teacher asked me when I showed this lesson plan to her stood out in my mind. I remember pointing out the expectation in the Ministry’s curriculum document. However, this incident reminded me that teachers are no longer here to drill concepts in our students’ heads, concepts that they might never use in the future. As shown by this lesson, teachers are preparing the students to have an understanding of scientific concepts and processes so that the students are able to make personal decisions in their everyday lives. Teaching this lesson increases scientific literacy, thus helping the students analyze and understand support systems provided by companies in order to create a safe and effective product.
